Country First (dissenters need not apply)

filthy nationalism

"Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders.  That is easy.  All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger.  It works the same in any country."

- Hermann Göring

Now, before anyone throws a hissy-fit, I'm not saying that the GOP are NAZIs... but they do seem to be reading from the same play-book.  All of those "Country First" signs and banners creep the fuck out of me.

Yeah, those were weirding me out, too. Patriotism is great, but "COUNTRY FIRST" sounds too much like "USA! LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT!" or whatever jingoistic stuff people are sticking on their cars.

I grew up in a military family, so patriotism was (and still is) a point of strength for me. What I'm seeing, however, isn't patriotism at all - it's nationalism, and that frightens me deeply.

I want my country back...

"one Man's meat is another mans poison"

I see that as "Country first, politics second" meaning put aside our differences, and work together to improve our situation.

I could total see that point, but only if I had seen those signs without watching the GOP convention. Everything that I've heard coming from that podium says politics first. In the context of the speeches that are being given, and in light of the last seven years of war, it all seems too nationalistic for my tastes.

I would love it if both sides would work together, but that's difficult when one side is busy calling the other side 'unpatriotic' simply because they disagree.
